Who We Are

Iraqi Turkmen Islamic Union

Iraqi Turkmen Islamic Union is an Iraqi Turkmen political organisation established in Syria on 15 Sha’ban 1411 AH (1991) during the period of the Iraqi opposition. It was founded to provide a political and organisational framework representing the aspirations of the Iraqi Turkmen community, defending its legitimate rights, and contributing to the building of a united Iraq founded upon justice, the rule of law, and national partnership.

The Union operates in accordance with the Constitution of the Republic of Iraq and the applicable laws. It is officially licensed by the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) under Registration No. 153. The Union is governed by its Internal Regulations, enjoys an independent organisational identity, and carries out its activities through its elected institutions and offices, reflecting the principles of institutional governance, consultation (shura), accountability, and responsible decision-making.

Since its establishment, the Union has continued to play an active role in Iraq’s political and national life, guided by its three founding principles: Islamic Values, National Belonging, and Turkmen Roots. These principles define the Union’s identity and provide the framework for its political positions, strategic vision, and activities throughout the Turkmen regions of Iraq.

The Union firmly believes that the Iraqi Turkmens are an integral and indigenous component of the Iraqi people. It considers the protection of their constitutional, political, cultural, and linguistic rights to be an essential element of strengthening equal citizenship, reinforcing national unity, and preserving Iraq’s rich cultural and ethnic diversity.

The Union is actively engaged in political, social, cultural, intellectual, and humanitarian fields through participation in public affairs, cooperation with state institutions and national political forces, support for community initiatives, contribution to the development of Turkmen-populated areas, and the promotion of dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and social solidarity.

For more than three decades, the Union has maintained a continuous presence in Iraq’s national political process and within governmental decision-making institutions in Baghdad. Throughout this period, it has consistently defended the rights of the Iraqi Turkmen community, contributed to the development of the Iraqi state, and upheld the conviction that Iraq’s strength lies in the unity of its people, the justice of its institutions, and respect for the rights of all its communities.

Today, Iraqi Turkmen Islamic Union continues to fulfil its national mission, building upon its institutional legacy and extensive political experience. It remains committed to serving Iraq and strengthening the position of the Iraqi Turkmen community as an essential partner in shaping the country’s present and building its future.
